Perma-Fix Announces Collaboration With Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for Oil and Gas Development Radiation Study

ATLANTA, GA -- (MARKETWIRE) -- 02/26/13 --  Perma-Fix Environmental Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: PESI) today announced it will collaborate with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to examine naturally occurring levels of radioactivity in activities associated with oil and natural gas development.

In connection with the study, the Pennsylvania DEP and Perma-Fix will begin to sample and analyze the naturally occurring radioactivity (NORM) levels in flowback waters, treatment solids and drill cuttings, as well as associated matters such as the transportation, storage and disposal of drilling wastes. The study, which is expected to take 12 to 14 months, is aimed at ensuring that public health and the environment continue to be protected. Perma-Fix certified health physicists and engineers have provided NORM consultation services for the past 15 years. They have worked with the DEP as a consultant on health physics and radiological issues for more than a decade providing radioactivity monitoring and technical assessment support.

Dr. Louis F. Centofanti, Chairman and CEO, commented, "We believe that this collaboration illustrates our valuable technical expertise in monitoring and assessing radioactivity associated with oil and gas production. We look forward to our involvement as we develop additional solutions for the oil and gas industry related to hydraulic fracturing."
