OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Perma-Fix Environmental Services, Inc. (Nasdaq: PESI; BSE) (Germany: PES.BE) - Chief Operating Officer, Larry McNamara, has been selected by the Southeast Compact Commission ("Commission") for Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management as the 2007 recipient of the Richard S. Hodes, M.D. Honor Lecture Award. The award, to be presented at the Waste Management Symposium held in Tucson, Arizona, in February 2007, recognizes innovation in the nuclear industry. The Commission will present this award to Mr. McNamara for the significant role he has played solving low-level radioactive waste management problems in the United States through commercialization of new technologies and the development of new applications for existing technologies. The award was created by the Commission to encourage environmental professionals and political leaders to develop innovative approaches to waste management in the United States.
Dr. Louis F. Centofanti, Perma-Fix Chairman and Chief Executive Officer said, "Larry McNamara has played an integral role in development of the unique expertise that Perma-Fix now provides to address some of the most challenging waste management issues for the nuclear industry. We are gratified by the acknowledgement of his achievements through this prestigious award."
Due to the leadership of Mr. McNamara, Perma-Fix has been able to treat millions of pounds of mixed waste once stored at nuclear sites around the country as "orphan" waste with no disposition path. To accomplish the disposition of these wastes, Perma-Fix led the nuclear industry in the commercialization of technologies and the integration of multiple fixed-base treatment facilities to provide the most comprehensive treatment services for these wastes, many of which, were previously considered untreatable and/or with no disposal path.
Perma-Fix Environmental Services, Inc. is a national environmental services company, providing unique mixed waste and industrial waste management services. The Company has increased its focus on the Nuclear services segment, which provides radioactive and mixed waste treatment services to hospitals, research laboratories and institutions, numerous federal agencies including DOE and the U.S. Department of Defense and nuclear utilities.
